Reflections On Matthew 14…

You know how you read a scripture and all of a sudden new revelation comes? Isn’t it amazing? You read it 10 times and all of a sudden, something new comes out? God is so amazing and vast that He can do that. I love it!

I read Matthew 14 several weeks ago and I still can’t get it out of my head. Hopefully my revelation will come out clearly on this post! So, it’s the passage where John the Baptist was beheaded. In verse 13, it says that when Jesus heard the news, he was very sad and withdrew to another place. But the crowd followed Him! I started thinking about my own life and times that I just want to be alone. Maybe I’m frustrated about something. Maybe I’m sad. Maybe I’m tired of people.

But the next part is what struck me the most. In Jesus’ weak point, his low point, he performed one of the greatest miracles we read about, the 5 loaves and 2 fish. Jesus saw needs and responded. He healed the sick and He provided food for the masses. Now I know I’m not Jesus, but how many times do I miss opportunities because I am so focused on myself and my situation? I realize that as I engage God, as I stay in tune with His voice, I will be sensitive to obey Him, even in my low points. Because in my weakness, He is made strong. That has been my daily prayer, to stay engaged and tuned in to His voice.

At the end of the chapter, Jesus does take that time alone with His Father. He knew He still needed that. He sent the disciples away and withdrew to the mountain to pray. Then He came back and taught them a great lesson on faith.
