One day my friend’s Facebook status indicated that her kids were anxiously awaiting their fruit leather to come out of the oven. That got me thinking…
The next thing I knew I was researching how to make fruit leather. I never dreamed how easy it would be! As I read the instructions, I realized all I needed to do was use my apple, pear, or mango butter recipes! You can also use other fruits.
Simply chop them up and remove any seeds or pits. For every 4 cups of fruit, add a cup of water and boil until soft.
Blend. Add any spices, like cinnamon or whatever you like, and add some lemon juice.
Cook about 5-10 min. longer.
Line baking sheet with foil. Spread onto sheet about 1/4 to 1/2 in. thick.
Place in sun to dry for 2-3 days.
You can also cook it in your oven on the lowest setting until it dries out, about 6 hours.
I chose the sun to save on gas and it worked great! After it dries out, simply peel the foil from the leather. This is a little tricky. Just make sure the leather is completely dried out. Then lay it on plastic wrap and roll it up. Just like a fruit roll up!
If you choose fruits that are fresh and naturally sweet, then you probably won’t have to add any sugar. That’s what I did. My kids (and myself) get a great on-the-go snack, without added sugar!
