surfer dudes and dolphins

Truth be told. I’m not much of a water person, and when I’m honest with myself, I admit that I have a slight water phobia. I’m not sure when it started or why. Maybe it was my lack of being in the water much as a child. Maybe it was due to the fact that, in my late teens, I got thrown from a raft while white water rafting and thought I was going to drown because I couldn’t seem to get my head above water (thankful for the person who grabbed my life vest and pulled me up). I’m not sure where it started, but in recent years, I’ve finally admitted to myself that I have a water phobia. That doesn’t mean that I don’t like to walk along the ocean shore or admire it from a distant. I find that rather relaxing.

I don’t like to use the word never, but it is highly, highly unlikely that I will ever venture out into the ocean with a surfboard (the root being my said phobia). First of all, sharks. Um, no way. Second of all, paddling out into that deep abyss…can’t do it. One evening, though, I was quite entertained by watching a group of four brave the ocean waters and catch some waves. I zoomed in as far as I could to catch the action. Amazing how they can ride waves on a piece of board.

dolphin tale

The last morning in Durban my boys and I got up to watch the sunrise. Amazing, but those photos will have to wait for another post, because this post is about surfers and dolphins, not sunrises. After the sun came up, we saw dolphins come by for a morning swim. It was so cool to see them riding the waves. They were a little harder to catch than the surfers, but do you see that dolphin tale? I could have watched them for hours.

    How neat to see dolphins!

I have a water phobia, too, and I really want to get my kids some swimming lessons so that they can be more confident in the water than I am.

Oh my goodness, I had such a fun time surfing (didn't even think of the sharks) – I want to go back so bad

I enjoy watching surfers, too. Hoping to get the kids some ocean swimming/surfing lessons this coming summer.
