the sewing and the crafting

bed

I didn’t mean to take such a long break from showing off our little apartment, but you know, life gets busy. I feel particularly busy with the season I’m in with my kids. But alas, the final post on the fun and craftiness in our little apartment. I’m a big fan of eye candy for the bed. It needs to look inviting. For me, that looks like pillows, lots of them. I had a great time picking out fabric and pillow sizes for our bed. How inviting is that? I also need to mention the awesome custom bed that one of our friends made. I showed him this photo on Pinterest and voila! I love it.

curtain

The other sewing that needed to happen was a curtain for the window. In the whole apartment, there was only one window that needed a curtain. I love a good corner with beautiful curtains and a lamp!

bathroom

I also sewed the shower curtain. That was a nightmare because of my not measuring right, but I made it work, and I like the end product.

beaded lampshade

The final bit of crafting in this space were the lampshades. My mother-in-love has a lamp with a beaded wire lampshade, and I thought, “Oh! That would be fun!” I love how those lamps look with a soft light.

That concludes my projects for this space. What fun creative stuff have you been up to lately?

Crafts creativity

the walls

Round two of simple creativity for our apartment walls consisted of empty wine bottles, clipboards, feathers, and sticks! I seriously spent hardly any money on the stuff I made for the walls. I balanced things out above the bed by mounting a piece of board with a wine bottle attached to it onto the wall. The tutorial for these are here. I did have to get creative since I couldn’t get some of the supplies here in SA, but they still turned out great. Unfortunately, these photos don’t show flowers in the vases, but they really pop with those bits of color in there.

Next up was the simple way of hanging photos using clipboards. I taped off half a section (diagonally) on each clipboard and painted it using paint I had lying around. Then I just clipped some art to it. Easy! (Those printables are found here and here, if you’re interested.)

Then there was the feathers. My dog hates these, but I love them. I found a wooden lad (that’s what we call them, anyways) left from another project and simply tied feathers to it. I love how these blow in the cool breeze.

The last bit of wall art consisted of a branch I found outside surrounded by various framed art. I swear the guys hanging that branch thought I was crazy, but I love the texture and shape of a branch hanging on the wall. Best of all, it was FREE!

That’s the wall art for our lovely, little apartment!

you’ve got mail

Valentine's mailboxes made out of milk jugs

Every year we have this Valentine’s tradition. We make mailboxes (we, as in the kids and I) for treats and notes to each other the week of Valentine’s. I thought for sure that Joshua would be so over it this year. He’s about to be 13. 13! That’s another blog post, but I’ll just leave it at this. Things change fast at that age. Like too fast. I was thrilled when his answer was yes to another year of mailbox making.

Valentine's mailboxes made out of milk jugs

It was a perfect Saturday craft last weekend. Every year we’ve managed to make a different mailbox. It sure is hard coming up with new ideas, BUT we found one that didn’t require me to buy anything extra. Score.

Empty milk jug…check.

Sharpie markers…check.

Various scrapbooking supplies…check (although it did remind me how far behind I am on the kid’s scrapbooks).

We added flags so that it would be obvious when there was actual mail.

And just in case anyone was wondering, there is NO MILK INSIDE, and this one belongs to Joshua. It’s not yourz. When you run out of S’s, you have to get creative. 🙂

Crafts creativity in the studio

in the studio :: 80’s art

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! I hope your Friday is fantastic. I can’t believe we’re nearing the end of September. August and September are busy months around here celebrating birthdays and our anniversary. We’re rounding out the month celebrating my favorite red head and favorite daughter.

cassette tape

Emma G takes these parties quite seriously and is very meticulous about the planning. To give you an idea, I have to run all food ideas by her first. It makes me laugh, but I’m just as serious about party planning, so I try to go with the flow. Several weeks ago, she decided she wanted an 80’s themed party. I have no idea where this came from (she says she just thought it would be fun to have lived in the 80’s), but I’ll tell you what. I’ve had such a good time reaching into the past and grabbing a hold of memories. Neon, sweat bands, leg warmers, feathered hair, ah! Oh, and don’t even get me started on the music.

I’ll reveal more party details after it’s happened when I have fancy photos to show you. Today, I’ll show you the easy artwork that’s going to adorn our back veranda. I printed some 80’s icons and glued them to square boards using Mod Podge. Then, I did a coat of Mod Podge over the whole thing. Easy peasy, and I have something fun to display.

boombox

Joshua asked me three times what the pink and purple thing was. The words “cassette tape” just didn’t compute in his mind. Well, I’m off to a weekend of party preparations!

in the studio :: st. patrick’s day bunting

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! Hope you’ve had a great week. We’ve continued to swim in lots of RAIN this week which has made everything a nice shade of green for our garden party tonight!

st patricks day bunting

Well, I always love a good holiday bunting, and although we don’t usually do a whole lot for St. Patrick’s Day, it was a good excuse to change from Valentine’s hearts to lucky clovers. These were super easy to bend into place while multitasking. A little show to keep me entertained and a little creativity to bring a smile to my soul were the perfect pair after a long day.

I followed Crafts Unleashed simple instructions to make shamrocks in a rainbow of colors to then hang on string to make a bunting. I really should have gotten the kids involved in making these, but sometimes Mama needs some quiet creativity. Know what I mean?
