the sewing and the crafting

bed

I didn’t mean to take such a long break from showing off our little apartment, but you know, life gets busy. I feel particularly busy with the season I’m in with my kids. But alas, the final post on the fun and craftiness in our little apartment. I’m a big fan of eye candy for the bed. It needs to look inviting. For me, that looks like pillows, lots of them. I had a great time picking out fabric and pillow sizes for our bed. How inviting is that? I also need to mention the awesome custom bed that one of our friends made. I showed him this photo on Pinterest and voila! I love it.

curtain

The other sewing that needed to happen was a curtain for the window. In the whole apartment, there was only one window that needed a curtain. I love a good corner with beautiful curtains and a lamp!

bathroom

I also sewed the shower curtain. That was a nightmare because of my not measuring right, but I made it work, and I like the end product.

beaded lampshade

The final bit of crafting in this space were the lampshades. My mother-in-love has a lamp with a beaded wire lampshade, and I thought, “Oh! That would be fun!” I love how those lamps look with a soft light.

lamp

That concludes my projects for this space. What fun creative stuff have you been up to lately?

in the studio :: diy dog bed

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! I’m laughing to myself as I write this realizing that it must be Snowy week. She’s been in every.single.post this week. Purely unintentional. If you’re not an animal lover, please excuse my ramblings.

I decided that if we were going to have a dog in the house, she had to have the cutest bed ever. We gathered several things I already had on hand (except the cover for her to sleep on) and made this…

snowy's bed

Cute, huh? We went to the fabric shop and bought the softest fabric we could find and I made a giant pillow cover for an old duvet and pillow we had. I can easily remove it for washing which is what I wanted. So far she loves her bed. When it’s hot, though, she prefers the coolness of the concrete floor.

The accessories were super fun. A girl has to have accessories, you know. I knitted her some dog bones and stuffed them with Joshua’s old socks. I’m not sure how long these will hold up. She loves them. I’m ok with them getting chewed up and destroyed over our shoes. The bunting is simply, because I love buntings and her bed needed a little cutesie touch. Do you think it did the trick? Isn’t she so cute laying in it?

in the studio :: my studio

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! Today I’m so excited to show you a studio I’ve been working on. It’s still a work in progress, but it’s come so, so far. Don’t you think?

studio before

I mean it’s seriously embarrassing to show you that a corner like that even existed in my house, but tucked away in my upstairs room, out of sight and out of mind, there is sat for months and months.

It wasn’t until we decided that this upstairs neglected room would be Joshua’s room that some change started to happen. Then this little corner started to become exactly how I envisioned it. I admit that it’s not ideal to have a creative corner in my son’s room, but it’s the only spot I have. Besides, once we do the addition we have planned, he will be moving rooms anyway. It all works out, right? I plan on putting a little curtain up so he doesn’t have to stare at my sewing machine.

I saw a project for making Hoopla baskets a while back and knew that I wanted some for my craft corner. I love how they turned out and wish I had space for more!

Even though the room is a shared space, it’s so nice just to have everything unpacked and easy to get to!

in the studio :: bed candy

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! Last month I featured artists from our Village Store. While I have more artists to feature, I thought I would start this month by showing you a little of what I’ve been working on personally.

So what have I been doing creatively? I did a photo shoot last weekend to feature Warby Parker’s new Ocean Avenue line. So fun. I realized that I need to be doing more photo shoots. It’s a busy season which means I have to make time for it. Easier said than done, but it so gives me life.

eyesore

I’ve also been deep in a bedroom makeover. It’s coming along but these makeover projects sometimes take time, don’t they? Especially when you’re doing the work yourself. I hope to reveal the entire project in due time. Today let’s start with some bed candy.

bed skirt

I decided I wanted to make my bed something that looked inviting to crawl into. Is anyone else like that or am I just weird? I started with a bed skirt. Honestly, I was tired at looking at the dirty box spring peeking out from under the quilt. It was an eyesore and needed some attention. I decided to make a skirt rather than buy one. I knew I wanted a dark gray, but I also knew that sometimes you have to be flexible with these things. Well, I found a dark gray material that I love! I’m not good with writing patterns, so I couldn’t really tell you exactly how I sewed this bad boy. I had the idea in my head and I’m glad it turned out the way I wanted it to. I’m even more glad that you can’t see the nasty box spring!

pillows

My focus after that was the pillows. Besides the green butterfly material, everything else I had on hand. I did the same basic pillowcase pattern that I’ve used in the past. I love how easy and fast it is. And I love how it makes my bed look. Inviting!

Sewing

matchy matchy

I don’t usually make matching outfits for me and my girl. In fact, I’ve tread very carefully on making much of anything for her simply because she’s a bit picky with her clothes. If she sees something she likes, I jump on it. She’s gotten into a groove of wearing three different outfits. Not sure why the change. Her fashion used to be very eclectic as she put outfits together. Not currently.

hand in hand

I saw this idea in the same issue of Sew It All as the men’s button down shirt idea. I found some cheap t-shirts at Goodwill for both me and her. I tried on my skirt after I made it and she said, “Cool! I want one.” That was my cue to go ahead as planned. 🙂

holding her

I made myself three skirts for summer and made her two. They’re such a simple re-purpose. I used large t-shirts and three inch wide elastic for myself and medium t-shirts and two inch elastic for her. Loving our matchy matchy skirts, and I can’t believe how big my baby girl looks walking next to me! Oh, and Joshua, whether he admits it or not, has officially become my fashion photographer. 🙂
