On our getaway to Pretoria, I picked this up on sale for a mere R15. The title definitely caught my eye. AIDS is so taboo here and it’s true, “Nobody Ever Said AIDS.” The next catcher? The last line of the first paragraph of the introduction. “It is creative responses such as these that remind us of the power of art in foregrounding the human face of suffering.”
The book is a compilation of different short stories and poems. It is an opportunity for those living with HIV/AIDS or those who have seen loved ones living and dying with HIV/AIDS to have a healing, creative outlet to express themselves. In a land where the words are unspeakable, I say YES to this book. Read their stories and your heart will be opened to the pain of their reality…
