book sling for the wall

We left most of our books in Africa, but thanks to family and friends, the kids have a steady growing collection here.  Joshua was given a bookcase to house his books, but Miss Emma has stored hers anywhere from the window sill to a backpack.  I like organization and the fact that her books didn’t have a home was driving me absolutely insane!

Then a friend showed me an idea in the magazine, Family Fun.  A book sling for the wall seemed like the perfect solution!  Not only would it house her books but it would make them more accessible for reading.  And the fabric does a fabulous job of decorating her photo-less walls.

books

I used Ikea fabric in the Annamoa green pattern.  I love the print (it seems to inspire imagination!) and the canvas texture to it.  Holding several books, it had to be sturdy.  I didn’t think of this post as a how-to, but if you can sew, I’m sure you can figure it out as all you need to do is figure out how big you want it to be, sew seams on the side, and a lip for the rod.  My supply list included…

1 yard of fabric
2 wooden dowel rods
2 brackets
screws and anchors
spray paint, optional (I sprayed the rods and brackets black to match her bed.)

checking it out

After writing all that, I decided to google the project and found it.  It’s a no sew version so if you don’t have a sewing machine, you might check it out!

Perhaps more than the organization, I love the accessibility she now has to all her books!
