the fiery furnace :: risk

With my 2012 “word” being risk, I am studying risk takers in the Bible.
It’s fascinating to learn these nuggets from Bible greats.

fire

Daniel 3 recounts the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, three guys who risked being burned alive. Nebuchadnezzar gathers all the people together to worship this HUGE golden idol. When the music sounded, everyone bowed down except these three.

Nebuchadnezzar’s anger burned against them. I love their response. They definitely weighed the consequences, I believe. Daniel 3:17, 18 indicates that they believed God might or might not deliver them from the furnace, but they were not going to bow down.

They took a huge risk. They knew the consequence was heavy…being burned alive, and yet they chose to stand up for what was right, for a God they loved. It’s not natural to choose the hard way, but I pray I will always have the strength and confidence to follow my convictions.

God did end up saving these three guys from the fiery furnace and used it to totally change Nebuchadnezzar’s heart. He made a radical stand for God, because of the choice of three ordinary individuals. You just never know how God might use our faith to speak to others…
